William Jamison Muntz was born in Malmsbury, Victoria, in 1868. He was the fifth of 10 children born to Thomas Bingham and Jane Jamieson Muntz, and Josephine’s second eldest brother. He was widely known throughout Victoria as a civil engineer.

At various stages of his career, he worked in Hamilton, Alexandra, Korumburra, Seymour, Kew and Frankston. He was a member of the engineering and surveying firm Muntz and Muntz, which his father co-founded. He married Alice Elizabeth Irvine in 1890 and together they had seven children.

This portrait was featured in Josephine’s retrospective exhibition at the Athenaeum Gallery in 1943, shortly before William died in June that year.
